Respectfully disagreeing over growth's future

Jason Hickel and Sam Fankhauser debate degrowth vs green growth, moderated by Kate Raworth

On September 02, 2022, a critical discussion took place at Oxford University’s School of Geography and Environment on one of the biggest questions we face on a warming planet: what is the role of economic growth in the transformation needed to secure a thriving future for humanity and the rest of the living world?

The 90-minute must-watch discussion took place between Jason Hickel, a leading academic on degrowth, and Sam Fankhauser, a leading academic on green growth, moderated by Kate Raworth, DEAL's co-founder and Conceptual Lead.

Kate hosted the session in a spirit of respectful disagreement, acknowledging the privileged position of universities to hold a space for this type of open, reflective debate. In particular, she invited the speakers and the audience to aim to appreciate the deeper perspective of whichever side of the degrowth/green growth debate they disagree with, and to consider what it would take to change their minds.

Watch the wide-ranging and deeply instructive discussion below (starts at 5m05s).

I highly agree with you Rodolfo. This discussion left me with an insight that I didn't expect at all.

And that is about respecting other people's views. Despite having this ignorance awareness reminder:

"It's a fact—everyone is ignorant in some way or another.

    Ignorance is our deepest secret.

And it is one of the scariest things out there, because those of us who are most ignorant are also the ones who often don't know it or don't want to admit it.

    Here is a quick test:

If you have never changed your mind about some fundamental tenet of your belief, if you have never questioned the basics, and if you have no wish to do so, then you are likely ignorant.

Before it is too late, go out there and find someone who, in your opinion, believes, assumes, or considers certain things very strongly and very differently from you, and just have a basic honest conversation.

It will do both of you good.”

Beautiful discussion. Well done to everyone involved.
Like I usually say, debating with those who agree with us is important because it validates what we think, but debating with those who disagree is extremely important because it helps us either to better argue our opinion or helps us discover a new path.
