Colorful trashcans for shopkeepers

We wanted to clean up our square and bring awareness to the negative side of litter in our environment.

We wanted to create a clean(er) square for everyone in the neighbourhood.
Part of the problem is that there aren't enough trashcans on the square and they are not located in the right places.
Unfortunately the municipality is not helping and doesn't want to place more trashcans because they say they don't have the money to empty them.
So we took matters into our own hands and decided to give all the shopkeepers their own brightly coloured trashcan and educate the public with billboards to encourage them to throw their trash in a bin instead of on the ground.
We organised a party to create awareness with a litter pick bingo for the kids, chalk challenge, free drinks and music and a little 'ceremony' where we handed out the bins.
The litter problem is not completely gone but it's gotten a lot better and people are more aware now. Also the shopkeepers see the benefit of a cleaner square. Unfortunately, 5 bins got stolen in the last couple of weeks but we're planning on buying more bins and to ask shopkeepers to take them inside during the night or chain them to a lamppost. The facts that even thieves like our bins, is encouraging though!
